01 — Charlie Parker Tribute

The Bird Legacy Project

A Jazz Legend Revived

After more than forty years, saxophonist Arie Kuit brings the iconic masterpiece "Charlie Parker with Strings" back to the stage. A unique fusion of bebop and classical strings, based on the original 1949 arrangements.

The "Charlie Parker of Rotterdam"

The passion for 'Bird' runs deep in Arie Kuit's DNA. As early as the beginning of the 1980s, right after completing his conservatory studies, he performed this legendary album live at the famous Rotterdam jazz venue Thelonious. At the time, it earned him the honorable nickname the "Charlie Parker of Rotterdam".

In the book Jazz in Rotterdam, Hans Zirkzee describes this legendary performance as:

"One of the most impressive performances in the history of the jazz center… A monumental task where the audience rose to their feet after the first notes and remained standing for the entire concert." — Hans Zirkzee, Jazz in Rotterdam

A Sensational Discovery

In February 2022, the impossible happened: Arie accidentally discovered the original, authentic arrangements of Charlie Parker with Strings in the United States. This offered a unique opportunity to perform the project exactly as it was originally intended. The repertoire includes sixteen arrangements, including three pieces that Charlie Parker himself never released on record.

With this, The Bird Legacy Project was born: a powerful collaboration between Arie Kuit's quartet and The Vegas String Orchestra.

Not a Copy, But a Unique Voice

Although the sheet music is authentic, the performance is far from a static reproduction. Arie Kuit is inspired by Parker, but infuses it with his own contemporary interpretation. The music is lived-in, mature, and intensely alive.

What the Experts Say

The project premiered on October 10, 2025, at the Sound of Europe Festival and was received with a standing ovation.

"Arie is Charlie Parker" "For both connoisseurs and newcomers alike, it was a joy to experience how perfectly the classical elements blend with the jazz saxophone. Arie doesn't just play in the style of, but is Charlie Parker." — Frank van der Kooij, Director Sound of Europe Festival
"A warm musical bath" "Arie Kuit proved himself a consummate master at sensing Parker's virtuosic playing style.
